DJ and music producer Kelvin Momo's fifth studio album, SEWE, breaks a record on streaming platform Spotify South Africa as it garnered over 1.328 million streams on Friday, August 9.
This makes him the first Amapiano artist to achieve this accomplishment. Currently, it has surpassed 3 million streams since its release.
Momo announced the album’s release date on Instagram two days before it officially dropped on streaming platforms, thus, raising concerns from his fan base. Why not wait for the festive?"Questioning the timing of the release of the album.
This uncertainty stemmed from the possibility that this album wouldn't reach high streams this time of the year. However, Kelvin Momo disproved them; within a day of the album's release, people flocked to Spotify to stream it, making it the most listened-to album in South Africa in a single day.
During the announcement, Momo extended his gratitude to the producers and artists who collaborated with him on the album, expressing how much this album means to him.
" This is a very special album, and it’s very close to my heart. Thank you to everyone who pulled up," said the 30-year-old producer.
The album consisting of 30 tracks and is the kind of album you should take your time listening to. The album takes you through a soulful musical journey with multiple sonic elements from different genres with a sprinkle of Jazz, tribal, soul, deep house, and a bit of Afro-soul.
The versatility of Momo's sound has created a perfect blend of multiple genres with a diversity of collaborations.
To further showcase his versatility one of the unexpected features on the album was the inclusion of award-winning rapper A-Reece on the song, "Got Feeling (Interlude)" where Kelvin Momo had the rapper, serenading and spitting some rhymes on an Amapiano instrument.
The album not only makes you feel like you're floating on cloud nine with its soulful harmonies but also gets you dancing with tracks like "Bonga", featuring Sam Deep and Nvcho.
Kelvin Momo has an incredible track record of quality music under his belt. In 2020 he released his debut "Momo's Private School" establishing himself as a genuine master of the Amapiano subgenre Private School Piano. The album consists of a unique music style; soulful chords paired with flute bass.
The following year, Momo became even greater as he released his mainstream record, “Ivy League," an album which you could say earned him even more popularity and recognition.
Some of his fans however have argued that Amukelani his 4th studio album released in 2022 is his best work.
According to Genius, the world's biggest collection of song lyrics and musical knowledge, Amukelani is Kelvin Momo's most popular album with an overall of 35.5k page views.
However, fans may contend that the newly released album Sewe is better than Amukelani making it Kelvin Momo's best album. Nonetheless, SEWE and Amukelani are undoubtedly Kelvin's finest albums based on streaming statistics and social media fandom.
Since he made he blew up in the music scene, Momo has been dropping an album every year, making him a consistent artist.
With the release of Khurula in 2023, another favorite, songs like ‘Amalobola, Khawleza, Ikhaya Lam, and Violin Sounds,’ which have been trending throughout this year, Momo is surely an artist to watch.
